Conover Attorney and Hickory Native Honored in Publication

Conover attorney and Hickory native, Susan Williams Matthews, has been selected to the 2017 North Carolina “Rising Stars” list published by Super Lawyers. This is the second consecutive year Matthews has received this award. Each year, no more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in the state are selected by the research team at Super Lawyers to receive this honor.

Matthews is a third-generation Catawba County attorney dedicated to the practice of law and continuing her family’s tradition of serving individuals and businesses in the Catawba Valley and surrounding areas. Matthews established Susan Williams Matthews, PLLC in 2016 and currently practices as Of Counsel to David L. Isenhower, Attorney and Counsellor at Law, PLLC in Conover.

Susan focuses her practice in the areas of estate planning and administration, business and corporate law and land use and zoning. She regularly assists individuals with their estate planning—wills, trusts, living wills, powers of attorney, etc.—and probate administration after a loved one’s passing.

She has considerable experience advising a broad spectrum of businesses, both in size and industry, in North Carolina. Having begun her career as a litigator representing public entities, corporations and individuals before state, federal and appellate courts, Susan offers corporate clients and individuals practical advice on minimizing risks and creative solutions for resolving disputes.

Susan also heads the firm’s land use and zoning practice. She has substantial experience serving as counsel for local zoning boards and other public bodies in North Carolina as well as advising individuals and businesses appearing before them.

Dedicated to the betterment and growth of the Catawba Valley community, Matthews currently serves on the Board of Directors for the United Arts Council of Catawba County. She is a Past President of the Catawba County Bar Association and a former member of the Board of Directors for the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce and UNC Law Alumni Association. She is a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover, a graduate of Leadership Catawba, and a member of the North Carolina Bar Association.

Matthews graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 2008 and earned her B.A. from Furman University, magna cum laude, in 2005.

Susan lives in Hickory with her husband Andrew, a Conover native, and their daughter and twin sons.
